Craft N Crop Needs Knitters, Crocheters And Sewers For Project For Troops

Friday, June 16, 2017

The July Craft ’n’ Crop at Heritage House is now enlisting knitters and crocheters to help with several sewing and no-sew projects for our servicemen and women.

In a mass effort to send some crafted love to troops overseas, Heritage House is asking all local crafters to join them each first Thursday of the month through December for Craft 'n' Crop for the Troops.

The July Craft 'n' Crop will take place on Thursday, July 6, at 6 p.m. at Heritage House Arts & Civic Center, 1428 Jenkins Road in the East Brainerd area.

"We recently began a project with the local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and we hope to finish a couple of the special projects to send to our soldiers and sailors overseas," said Chris Holley, director of Heritage House.

Most recently they have begun work on knit helmet liners for troops in Afghanistan and elsewhere. The helmet liners preserve body heat at higher altitudes and the yarn used will be color-coordinated to match the preexisting military uniform.

Manager Chris Holley added, "The Chattanooga area has been blessed with many talented artists and crafters and we hope to add your skill and imagination to these very worthy projects.

"We will be completing stuffing and sewing of numerous 'mini hearts' which will travel with the troops. The hearts are designed to be small enough to be easily carried in the breast pocket so as to remind the troops that we are thinking of them back home.

"In addition to the mini-hearts, we are also hand-painting miniature 'tree skirts' to accompany mini Christmas trees which will be shipped out this fall in time for the holidays.

"We have a no-sew pattern that can be used, or you can get as fancy as you like with the tree skirts. We have all the materials needed to get a good start on these projects.  If you have a set of pinking shears that you can bring and use that would be great, as we are in short supply of specialty shears for working on the no-sew tree skirts."

And, as always, those with a craft or scrap-booking project to work on at Craft n’ Crop, are most welcome to bring that, as well.

Admission to Craft 'n' Crop is free and food is potluck.

Exempt Volunteer Fire Departments From Procurement Policies - And Response (2)

The Hamilton County Commission just grouped a bunch of departments together in an attempt to reign in the CVB. I haven't spoken to any commissioners, but I truly believe it was unknowingly. By mandating that all non profits that receive 25 percent of their revenue follow county procurement policies, they might as well have padlocked all local volunteer fire departments. We expect ...
