Police have charged Anthony Peter Vance with rape in connection with an attack Jan. 3 on a woman who was grabbed while on her way home from work.

Vance, 54, was located at the Community Kitchen and taken into custody on Wednesday.

Police said the 48-year-old woman, who lives near Vance's home address, had gotten off at the bus stop at Wilson Street and Wilcox Boulevard at 6:45 a.m.

She said she was then approached by a dark-skinned black male. He was described as 5'7", wearing a horizontal striped white and brown shirt, khaki pants, dark brown shoes, a black jacket and a blue or black toboggan.

She said the man grabbed her and forced her into the backyard of some nearby duplexes.

After a brief tussle, she said the man raped her.

She said he told her he was a member of the Crips gang and if she called police he would kill her and her family.

After the woman contacted police the same day, officers searched a data base and came up with Vance as a possible suspect. She picked him from a photo lineup.

Vance was charged with rape in 2014, and two years later he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. He was given a 10-year suspended sentence.

He was charged last December with a violation of the sex offender registry.
