Covenant Tennis Falls In USA South Semifinals

Saturday, April 14, 2018
In a battle of regionally ranked teams with a berth in the USA South Tournament championship on the line, the Covenant men's tennis team narrowly fell to Methodist by a 5-4 final on Saturday afternoon at LaGrange College in the semifinals of the conference tournament.

Covenant, ranked 17th in the ITA Atlantic South region poll, finishes the year 15-5 overall. Methodist (15-7), ranked No. 16 in the region, moves on to face N.C. Wesleyan on Sunday for the tournament title.

Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox finished strong with wins in both doubles and singles play.
As a tandem at No. 1 doubles, Harvie and Cox won for a 17th straight time with their 8-2 win over Methodist's Jacob Oehser and Reid Rose.

However, Methodist would take doubles wins at Nos. 2 and 3 to grab a 2-1 match lead.

Harvie won a battle of regionally ranked individuals at the No. 1 singles spot against Methodist's RJ Clement. Ranked No. 19 in the region, Harvie took down Clement 6-3, 6-3 at the top spot. Clement was the last player to beat Harvie in USA South play back in 2016, but Harvie got the final meeting between the two in their collegiate careers.

Cox also collected two wins on the day as he was a 6-4, 7-5 winner at the No. 2 spot over Coleman Baker to keep Covenant in the match. The win was No. 56 in Cox's singles career.

Logan Hull collected a point for the Scots at No. 3 with his 6-1, 6-2 win over Rose at the No. 3 flight. Methodist was able to hang on for the victory by taking singles wins at each of the final three spots. Wynn Johnson outlasted Paxton Haggerty 6-4, 7-5 at the fifth spot.

Randy Smith: SEC Picks Week Four

There have been few surprises in the SEC through the first three weeks of the season. One of them however is Alabama. Why you might ask? Well, the Crimson Tide seems to be even better than we all thought. In fact, I don't know if any team in the country can beat them this year. For instance, this week against a top-25 Texas A&M team, 'Bama is a 28 point favorite.  Texas ... (click for more)

Arming Teachers With Guns Will Be Too Dangerous - And Response (4)

Arming teachers with guns in the classroom, as Bill Lee proposes, would be the single most dangerous thing to happen to students in Tennessee history. Students and teachers in close proximity to loaded firearms daily? Across this state, in middle schools alone, there are probably hundreds of student/teacher conflicts a day. What if a student got hold of gun in a struggle with ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: Scream ‘Sexual Assault!’

Candace Owens, a communications director for the conservative non-profit “Turning Point,” wasted not a minute’s time as the Democratic debauchery of Supreme Court appointee Brett Kavanaugh raced like a prairie fire across America. There is little doubt that many politicians -- on either side of the aisle -- play a little loose with the truth. But this Eleventh Hour attack on the ... (click for more)
